Research shows that 13% of the global population currently suffers a mental illness and more than half experience psychological distress or maladaptive symptoms. This trend extends to pre-adolescence, with for example 53% of 13-year-olds experiencing at least one psychological symptom the past week, and around 22% of 12-year-olds engaging in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), with 5% reporting a suicide attempt during the past year. These youngsters will become the adults of tomorrow. At the same time, psychology specialized in the older population has emerged as a pressing knowledge competency as the majority of elderly experience psychological distress, requiring assessment and treatment that recognizes the considerable wider heterogeneity in functioning in older adults. The PRISM network delves into these paramount trends affecting millions of households, societies, and governments. It is dedicated to advance mental health and resilience across the whole lifespan.
The main aim of the PRISM network is to foster advancements in mental health through three inter-related research programs, namely Risk Algorithms and Tailored Prevention, Innovations in Psychological Assessments, and Leveraging Technology for Intervention.
